Batch Three available mid-May. RRP £31.49 |
The Belvenie Signature 12YO Batch Three released
First created in 2008 to mark malt master, David Stewart’s 45th year in the whisky industry, The Balvenie Signature 12 Year Old from William Grant & Sons is a limited release, single malt Scotch whisky produced in small, numbered batches.
Its character is achieved through marrying the three traditional cask types: first fill bourbon, refill bourbon and sherry. From the sherry butts comes rich fruit and spiciness; the bourbon barrels convey subtle vanilla oak and layers of honey, while the refill casks impart delicate, sweet notes and smoothness.
“What we've ended up with is a complex single malt with many layers of taste and structure, one that really demonstrates the magic of the wood – making it a lovely addition to The Balvenie collection,” says Stewart.

Highland Park launches Vintage Editions range
The range, exclusive to global travel retail and a first for the distillery, consists of four single malt whiskies distilled in 1998, 1994, 1990 and 1973.
Max McFarlane, whisky maker at the Orcadian distillery chose sherry seasoned casks that would showcase different dimensions of the classic Highland Park profile of honey sweetness and aromatic peat. The differences between the expressions lie in the extent to which first-fill or refill European and American sherry oak casks have been used.
The 1998 and the 1990 Vintages emphasise the smokier notes while the 1994 and the 1973 highlight the sweeter characteristics.
Duty Free RRP: 1998 €46 (1litre), 1994 €65 (70cl), 1990 €99 (70cl) and 1973 €750 (70cl). The range will be available from April/May 2010. |

The oak box draws on Orkney’s Norse heritage in the form of the woodcarvings in the characteristic ‘gripping beast’ style seen on the Oseberg ship, the oldest and most beautiful vessel of the Viking age. |

Grand Armagnac Janneau launches Single Distillery
range in contemporary packaging
Selected from Janneau’s large stocks, the new line comprises four Armagnacs with different minimum periods of ageing: 8 year old, 12 year old, 18 year old and 25 year old, which is clearly defined on each of the 50cl bottles. The contemporary-style packaging was the result of a joint effort by Janneau's in-house creatives and Daedalus, a packaging agency based in Angoulème.
Unusual in Armagnac, where most Armagnacs are distilled only once, the Single Distillery range is entirely produced using the double distillation method, and the Single Distillery name indicates that it is distilled, aged and bottled uniquely at the House of Janneau in the heart of the Armagnac region. Janneau was one of the first Armagnac producers to reintroduce double distillation to the region in 1972, fervently believing that when fused with the specificity of the Armagnac ‘terroir’ gives a finer quality to the spirit.
The Single Distillery is a soft, fruity and fine style that is tastefully packaged in elegant coordinating drums. A new concept in Armagnac, that confirms its place as a premium AOC spirit. |

Bruichladdich takes on "Ugly Betty"
Islay whisky distillery Bruichladdich has installed an unusual fifth still. The Lomand is a defunct experimental cross between a Coffey and a pot still. It has a thick column-like neck with removable sections inserted. The plates, like Roman blinds, can be opened and, by varying the angle of the lyne arm, give a lighter or heavier spirit. The aim was to create more character and variety of styles of spirit by imitating the results from stills with different neck lengths.
The first Lomand still was installed in 1956 at Inverleven, part of the Dumbarton grain distillery which was raised to the ground in 2004 but not before Bruichladdich had rescued, among other things, the still, which is now believed to be the only one in existence. Says Mark Reynier, MD Bruichladdich: “It may be the only one of its type left, but sheʼs no oil painting. Welcome to Ugly Betty.”

Macallan's cool serve
An ice ball serve kit, distributed by Maxxium UK to outlets across the UK, enables bars to produce a perfect ice ball time after time, allowing consumers to enjoy the Speyside single malt whisky in a new way.
.
The Ice Ball Press takes its inspiration from Japanese cocktail culture where artisans hand-carve ice balls from massive slabs to create an uninterrupted plane that cools spirits quickly and evenly. Theintegrity of the spirit is preserved as the ice melts slowly.
"As global cocktail culture has evolved, ice has become central to the contemporary spirits experience. With an eye on this trend, we created The Macallan Perfect Serve, to modernise the way single malt can be enjoyed and appeal to a wider range of consumers,” explains Macallan marketing assistant, Pat Lee. |

Macallan has developed a copper press that instantly trims a block of ice into a flawless ice ball. |
