A new breed of packaging for
The Naked Grouse

The Edrington Group has a new addition to The Famous Grouse’s range of blended Scotch whiskies – The Naked Grouse – in a crafted white flint bottle manufactured by Allied Glass Containers. The bottle exudes premium values while achieving a modern image. This is realised, not by relying upon the use of weight, but by designing a right-weight container with almost no labelling, making the product the hero, without the use of unnecessary packaging.

For instant on-shelf brand recognition, the bottle has the Famous Grouse image debossed into its face. Allied Glass designers married 3D modelling technology with traditional craftsmanship, to ensure the moulding was as intricate and accurate as possible. This involved hand chipping the feathered detail, to give a non-uniform natural appearance. On the base of the bottle is an embossed grouse footprint and the words ‘please recycle’ are in place of the traditional stipple.

The blend was crafted in 2009, released in 2010. The blend containis 25 highly-prized and distinctive malt and grain whiskies, including the first ever laid down at Grant’s Girvan distillery and rare whiskies from distilleries no longer in existence.

12oz 'cool' can for sharing outdoors

Dram in a can from Scottish Spirits

A Panama-based company, called Scottish Spirits, has added a whiskey to its proposed list of ‘Liquors in a Can’. Scottish Spirits launched the can in January as it believes “outdoor drinkers would prefer to crack open a tin rather than lug round a bottle of their favourite tipple”. Vodka, brandy, cognac, bourbon, sake and tequila in a can will also soon be available worldwide, the company boasts on its website.

Although Scottish Spirits retains an office in Glasgow, its drinks are produced and manufactured in the US – not Scotland as the company name suggests. And consumers could, therefore, be confused as to whether or not the product is real Scotch. It certainly isn't the traditional packaging for an unmixed spirit – nor is it re-closable like a good, old-fashioned hip-flask, or even a small plastic bottle, so it will be interesting to see if the idea catches on in their main export markets of Latin America and the
Caribbean Islands.

Glenmorangie Finealta recreates century-old recipe

The Glenmorangie Company has unveiled a modern classic with the European release of Glenmorangie Finealta. Finealta, Scottish for ‘elegant,’ is a recreation of a 1900s Glenmorangie recipe that was uncovered in the distillery’s archives and is the latest addition to the Private Edition range.

The whisky has distinctive vanilla and citrus notes and hints of mandarin, lime and breakfast marmalade on toast. However, the final touch is a hint of peat that originates from when the distillery dried its malted barley in a peat-fired kiln.

A special Finealta cocktail has also been created for the event called ‘Smoke and Mirrors’, which features the Glenmorangie Finealta whisky being ‘smoked’ in a decanter in front of the customer.

Glenmorangie Finealta is available in 70cl bottles at £65.99 from selected specialist retailers.

Paul Daly designs St Patrick's Day bottle for Jameson whiskey

Jameson whiskey asked internationally acclaimed Irish artist Paul Daly to create a new limited edition bottle for St Patrick’s Day, March 17.
The contemporary bottle design is inspired by Celtic illustrations in The Book of Kells – a lavishly decorated account of the four gospels, written around 800AD, which is thought to have inspired much of modern Celtic art.
The screen-printed image provides texture, while all gold-coloured elements are foiled to highlight the brand’s premium positioning and enhance on-shelf stand-out. Bespoke POS, including engraved glassware and limited prints of the artwork, will support the launch.
The St Patrick’s Day bottle will be available from mid-February in selected markets including the UK, Latvia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Travel Retail Europe.

Clear new labelling for Tariquet Armagnacs

There's no mistaking the Château du Tariquet Color Collection of cask strength Bas-Armagnacs as it shows off its striking new modern labels that clearly tell customers exactly what they need to know.

The three Bas-Armagnacs in the range include an 8 year old blend 51.1° (orange label), a 12 year old blend 48.9° (purple label) and a 15 year old 46.8° (green label) made from 100% Folle Blanche that has been awarded gold at several international competitions.

The historical grape variety Folle Blanche (first recorded in 1384) is one of the ten varieties permitted in AOC Armagnac known for its extreme finesse with floral and fruity aromas, yet paradoxically only 5% of vineyards in the official AOC production area grow this grape variety. This is mostly due to the fact that it is a very fragile grape to grow with tightly packed bunches that are prone to disease, therefore requiring extreme care and attention throughout its development and harvesting. Château du Tariquet manages 25 hectares of the variety, making it the largest area of Folle Blanche grapes owned by a single producer in the Armagnac AOC region.

Gift tin for Chivas 12YO is designed by Alex Trochut

Chivas Regal Scotch whisky has teamed up with graphic designer and illustrator Alex Trochut of Barcelona – renowned for his technically exquisite type creations and designs – to launch a limited edition gift tin for its 12 Year Old expression.

The presentation tin, which will be available globally, was inspired by the Chivas Regal heraldry and label crest and incorporates a contemporary, bold monogram based on the twists and movements of a steel ribbon. Its clean metallic finish is elegant, contemporary and masculine – qualities that match the projected image for the brand.

Distillery launches 14YO and celebrates first year of profit

The Arran Malt 14 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky from the 15 year-old Scottish independent distiller based in Lochranza, Isle of Arran. The new whisky is bottled without any chill-filtration at 46% ABV and uses no artificial colouring.

The distillery is also expecting to make its first profit since opening its doors in 1995 - this is anticipated to be £35,000-£40,000.

Says MD Euan Mitchell: “For a distillery of our age and size, and because of whisky’s maturation period, it was always accepted that it would take time to deliver profitability. Seeing as the Isle of Arran Distillery was purpose built from scratch, this is clear recognition of the progress we are making.”

Whisky distiller wins environmental award

The Scottish Farmer business magazine awarded ʻEnvironmentally Aware Supplier of the Year 2010ʼ to Islayʼs Bruichladdich distillery for its organic single malt, using Scottish barley and supporting local farmers in remote, rural areas.
The privately-owned Hebridean distillery annually commissions 2000 tons of heritage and modern barley varieties from 23 Scottish farms, including 14 on the Isle of Islay.
Bruichladdich MD, Mark Reynier, said: “Provenance is very important to us in these days of bland globalisation. From barley to barrel to bottle we have total traceability and variety, so our customers can enjoy maximum authenticity and flavour. We highly value our farmer relationships and are honoured to have been recognised by this environmental award. Single malt whisky is made from water and barley; we think it should be exclusively Scottish-grown barley; it is, after all, called ʻScotchʼ.”

a premium polish

Chivas Brothers is giving its Aberlour malt whisky a more contemporary premium look to clearly position the brand in the luxury spirits category.  It is currently being rolled out on a global basis.
