Grape thieves strike in South of France

"They used a harvesting machine to gather grapes. This means there was no need to have lots of people, two people would have been enough," Cavaille told Le Parisien newspaper. "The area was quite isolated, it is a few kilometres from the village and near a river. So the thieves were able to work safely." He believes the thieves were professionals who will have sold on the grapes. He is angry and surprised by the theft, as he believed there was a "degree of solidarity" between winemakers.

Budget sees more unwelcome tax rises on alcohol

The UK government has announced in today’s Budget (March 24, 2010) a 5.1% increase in alcohol duty, which means taxes on wine and spirits have risen by over 25% and 20% respectively since March 2008.  Since 1997 the Government has taken an extra £4bn from consumers in alcohol taxes. Typically this means 10p on a 75cl bottle of wine, 36p on a 70cl bottle of spirits, and 2p on a pint of beer.

The Chancellor went ahead with the tax escalator, which automatically increases tax on beers, wines and spirits by two percentage points above inflation for two further years from 2013. Cider, the Chancellor said, had been under-taxed in comparison and therefore he has increased duty on cider by 10% above inflation. This comes ahead of further changes in September to the definition of cider to ensure specific strong ciders are taxed more appropriately.

David Poley, the Portman Group’s CEO, said: “It is difficult for consumers to tell that Yegaar is an alcoholic drink, let alone how strong it is. We don’t even know what kind of alcohol it contains. It is alarming that a drink is being marketed in this way.”

The complaint came from Cellar Trends, which distributes the spirit Jagermeister.

Minimum pricing is illegal

In a serious blow to the Scottish Government's plans to introduce a minimum price scheme for alcohol, the European Court of Justice has ruled today (March 5) that the minimum pricing of tobacco in Austria, Ireland, and France violates EU law.
Gavin Hewitt, CEO The Scotch Whisky Association, said: “Today’s ruling is a major development, confirming our contention that minimum pricing breaches EU law and unfairly distorts competition. Given this latest evidence, the Scottish Government must now recognise the legal realities. It cannot introduce a trade barrier in breach of the UK’s European obligations by imposing minimum pricing on alcohol in Scotland.
“The Court has also said that measures to prevent sales at a loss are acceptable. The SWA has said repeatedly that we are ready to work with the Scottish Government on just such a legal, alternative and transparent mechanism to address alcohol harm. We would urge the Scottish Government to withdraw minimum pricing from the Alcohol Bill and hope that a consensus can now be reached on tackling loss leading sales of alcohol.”

Bacardi and Brown-Forman have mutually agreed to end their distribution arrangements in Germany and not to renew their distribution contract expiring at the end of September 2010.
Bacardi, which has distributed for Brown-Forman in Germany for a number of years, wishes to focus on its core brands of Bacardi rum, Martini vermouth, Grey Goose vodka, Eristoff vodka, Bombay Sapphire gin, and Dewar's Scotch whisky, in theGerman market, and Brown Forman will be making its own arrangements to create a new subsidiary.
“This decision supports Bacardi’s strategy of growing its family of premium brands in key regional and local markets,” commented Bacardi CEO Séamus McBride
The two companies’ cooperation will continue in the US and the UK as well as a number of other markets worldwide.  Both companies will continue to explore new arrangements where appropriate.

Lager brands must act differently to appeal to women concludes new Mintel research report

Lager value sales have fallen by 10% in the past five years and Mintel forecasts that even beyond the current recession the market will continue to see a year-on-year decline. The problem is that fewer people are drinking alcohol, meaning that competition between drinks is more intense than ever.
The categories that will do well are those, such as wine, whose targeting transcends gender and age. However, lager consumption is currently too dominated by men aged 18-34.

Minimum pricing won’t work, claims new research

The urgent need to tackle Britain’s drink-fuelled violence and health problems has led to calls for a minimum retail price for alcohol. But rather than reduce consumption of alcohol, new research shows that if the price of alcohol was significantly increased in supermarkets, only 21% (just over 1 in 5) of adult British drinkers said they would buy less alcohol and spend the same amount as they do now.

The research published by the Wilson Drinks Report is based on industry trends and changing consumer attitudes relating to the sale and consumption of alcohol in the UK.
