Marian Kopp joins Niederberger Estates

Marian Kopp has been recruited by Niederberger Estates, a group of high end German Estates, owned by German investor Achim Niederberger.

Later this year, Kopp will become managing director of Reichsrat von Buhl winery, purchased by Niederberger in 2005 but presently leased to Japanese investors.

He holds a degree in business administration from Frankfurt/Main University and has previously worked for the Racke Group, Germany and The Donum Estate, USA. Kopp was also Golden Kaan’s founding president (formerly a joint venture between Racke and KWV International).

Marian Kopp is a member of ROTARY International, the worldwide leadership and service organization, and lectures on wine marketing at France’s prestigious Bordeaux Business School.

The Reichstrat von Buhl estate has been a family-owned business for over 150 years and has ranked among the most prestigious estates in Germany ever since. It was founded in 1849 and very soon made a significant name for itself well beyond the borders of Germany. It has been the recipient of some of the top awards at international wine exhibitions in Paris and Brussels. Today the estate is owned by Achim Niederberger and since 1989 the estate had been leased to an operating company.

Since the 2008 vintage, the estate has been involved in an official procedure to obtain certification for organic cultivation. This step was not motivated purely by idealism, but by the conviction that this will help us produce even better qualities.

One of the grand old estates that were at one time part of the pioneering Jordan estate (the other two were Bassermann-Jordan and von Winning). The estate and its buildings are protected as a national monument. In the 19th century, Armand von Buhl was key in promoting the estate internationally. In 1869, his Rieslings were served at the opening of the Suez Canal. The estate has significant holdings throughout the “Mittelhaardt”. In the villages of Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg the estate has significant ownership in several Grand Cru vineyards such as Kirchenstück, Pechstein, Ungeheuer, Jesuitengarten, Paradiesgarten.

The 62 ha estate is planter 88% to Riesling, 8% Pinot Noir and 4% to Scheurebe, Rieslaner and Sauvignon Blanc. It also produces superb sparkling wines especially the single vineyard Pechstein.

The von Buhl Estate is a member of the VDP and is farmed organically.
