Nomacorc, a global producer of alternative wine closures, has introduced a high-performance line of co-extruded synthetic closures aimed at artisan winemakers producing premium wines. The first product in the Select Series range of closures will be available for delivery in January 2011.
“We created the Select Series based on the results of our oxygen management research and working with winemakers around the world,” said Malcolm Thompson, global vice president of marketing and innovation at Nomacorc. “In particular, the Select Series products provide solutions for the complex oxygen management requirements of different types of red wines that will remain in the bottle for years before consumption, as well as delicate white wines that are particularly sensitive to oxygen exposure.”
The Nomacorc Select Series consists of multiple products, each designed to play a specific role in post-bottling oxygen management, wine preservation and development. Nomacorc’s global research programs have revealed that the management of oxygen throughout the winemaking process is crucial to achieving optimal wine aroma, flavour, structure and colour and that the closure directly affects the chemical and sensory development of wine.
“Our research projects are steering the development of future generations of closure technologies, such as the Select Series,” said Dr. Stéphane Vidal, global director of enology for Nomacorc. “When oxygen exposure during bottling is properly controlled and the total amount of oxygen is evaluated, the wine closure becomes a tool to guide post-bottling wine development.”
Integrating science and art, the Select Series closures have a visual appearance and texture almost indistinguishable from natural cork. The ends of the Select Series closures have a bark-like roughness and chamfered edge achieved using advanced cutting technology. Using a proprietary process that can replicate more detailed artwork than the traditional fire-branding used on natural corks, the Select Series are the first synthetic closures that can be end-printed.
The first Select Series product, Select 700, will be available in 38, 44 and 47 mm lengths in a natural wood grain finish. Additional Select Series products will be launched later in 2011.
