U-boat cocktail experience served in a bottle

German company U-Boot Getränke is banking on a worldwide first in the spirits sector with an innovative packaging concept from Greiner Packaging.

U-Boot Getränke is introducing a classic mixed drink on to the market that has previously only been available in selected restaurants and pubs. The U-boat is a schnapps glass filled with high-proof spirits that is dropped into a glass with soda, or beer.

The new packaging solution provides the experience without the need for glasses and is aimed at on-trade premises that serve drinks by the bottle only.

“We have developed a bottle-in-the-bottle concept and mastered the challenge of functionality and product safety with a 30ml PET spirit bottle suspended in a 140ml PET soda bottle," explains Günter Ausserwöger, head of Greiner Packaging Division Kavo.  "Both bottles are sealed with a single cap which, when unscrewed, detaches the smaller inner bottle  ̶  the U-boat  ̶  from the seal; the U-boat then sinks in the bigger outer bottle.

“This new packaging provides U-boat drinks for the first time as filled, finished products.”

The U-boat drinks are available in four flavours (blue - a glacier water liqueur with lemon soda; green – a herb liqueur with an energy drink,  yellow - vodka with orange soda; and orange - vodka with an energy drink).

This innovative system solution, the drinks producer says, is perfectly suited for skiing areas, as well as clubs and discos.

The inner and outer bottles are made in injection stretch blow moulded PET. There is a single, injection moulded HDPE seal for both bottles, with the small bottle having a snap-on neck and the large bottle a screw-top neck.

The decoration on the outer bottle is screen printed with UV drying colours and the seal is pad printed.
