Small batch gin launches in Manchester

A new small batch gin has been launched in Manchester. Thomas Dakin Gin is a classic style juniper-led gin whose namesake created the world’s first quality English gin and founded the world’s oldest gin distillery in 1761.

This new gin, created by master distiller Joanne Moore, has been named in honour of Thomas Dakin, the young gin innovator. It is distilled in a baby pot still, using a eleven botanicals including juniper, orange peel and English coriander, with the unique addition of red cole, a root botanical used in the 18th Century and known today as horseradish.

David Hume from Thomas Dakin Distillers says: “Today we are launching a great tasting classic style gin with a twist and taking inspiration from Thomas Dakin, a young entrepreneur from 18th century northern England whose inventive and enlightened outlook paved the way for gin as we know it today.

“We are delighted to be launching in Manchester as this is where we will build a new distillery to distil Thomas Dakin Gin.”

Joanne Moore, adds: “We have created a delicious small batch gin which is juniper-led, with sweet orange and citrus notes on the palate and a smooth, savoury finish thanks to the cubebs and red cole.”

The packaging, designed by Here Design, takes inspiration from the 18th century when Thomas Dakin founded his gin distillery. The bespoke square gunmetal grey bottle features heavy embossing on the glass and on the distinctive red label, a colour frequently used in the Georgian period, and includes detailed text on Thomas Dakin and the gin.

The neck label highlights that it’s small batch and the neck tag includes more detail on the heritage of the gin. The grey wooden cap features a Thomas Dakin monogram and has a natural cork to add to the premium cues.

While the gin is currently being distilled by G&J Distillers in Warrington, Cheshire, close to where Thomas Dakin distilled his original gin, Thomas Dakin Gin will be distilled in Manchester when the new distillery is built. Thomas Dakin Gin and G&J Distillers are owned by the Quintessential Brands Group.

Thomas Dakin Gin is available in Harvey Nichols Manchester and will roll out to Harvey Nichols stores nationwide. It is also available in Booths and fine bars and restaurants in Manchester and throughout the UK with a RRP of £29.00 for 70cl (ABV 42%).
