A premium African vodka made using a sugarcane base spirit is hitting the market.
Vusa, which means 'awaken', is made from sugarcane grown in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and blended with water from the hills of the region's midlands.
It is made with a filtration process using shells from the baobab tree to create an activated charcoal filter, which it claims is a unique process that gives the spirit a smooth finish.
Vusa Vodka's creative director, Thabo Molaba, said: "Vusa embodies the vibrancy, creativity and quality you find in all four corners of the African continent and we have made it our mission to take this spirit to the world."
Head distiller Angelo Page said: "With a fresh take and unfiltered point of view on African craft and style, we created Vusa to not only put new craft and new energy into the vodka category but to also show the world what Africans have always known about its culturally and resource-rich continent."
As well as its main distillery in KwaZulu-Natal, Vusa is investing in a mobile distillery that will travel through the continent to produce new flavours and limited-edition expressions, as a platform to celebrate African voices and culture.
It has also established the Vusa Foundation, through which a proportion of all its profits will be donated to the Khulisani Foundation which aims to support urban farming and drive positive change in South African communities.
