Two new Mauritian rums inspired by 'beach living' are making their way to UK shelves.
Beach Bum Rum, distilled and bottled in Mauritius, comes in Gold and Silver varieties. The molasses-based rums use a blend of sugar canes and are distilled using a combination of column and pot stills. The brand has made a nod to its island home on its bottles, including its wildlife, beaches, fruits and flowers.
According to the company, its Silver rum is best served with simple mixers or in a classic Daiquiri, while its deeper Gold rum would sit well in cocktails such as a Piña Colada or with a mixer on ice.
The new rums are the first spirit venture of David Adamson, a Scot who fell in love with Mauritius when he visited the island in 2016. He said: "We've used the island's finest sugar cane to produce our own unique blend before naturally infusing the rums with coconut and vanilla.
"By combining column and pot stills in the distillation process we've made a true traditional rum with a modern twist. Both rums are incredibly versatile, can be enjoyed neat, short or long, and bring a tropical vibe to any drink and occasion."
Adamson has been in the drinks business for more than a decade and worked for Sovereign Brands in Africa and Asia before setting up his own company. "I was always attracted to rum and knew there was a gap in the market for a fun, modern brand to come out of Mauritius, which has been making some of the world's best rum for 150 years," he said.
"Now we're seeing rum's popularity grow in the UK. It's a really consumer-friendly spirit, is lighter in taste, has lots of different flavour profiles and can be mixed easily."
Bottled at 40% ABV, both Beach Bum Rum Silver and Gold are priced at £29.99 for a 70cl bottle and can be purchased through Master of Malt.
