Skylark Spirits, a specialist sugar cane spirits importer based in the UK, has announced the launch of its own rum brand.
Vidya Rum has been created jointly by Skylark Spirits and rum reviews and events site RumCask, run by brothers Jaz and Indy Anand and Chet Ladwa.
Its first independent bottling, The River Mumma, uses rum distilled at the New Yarmouth distillery in Jamaica in 2005 which has been aged in ex-Bourbon casks in Jamaica and Europe. Bottled at 61.5% ABV, the run of this single barrel rum is limited to 255 bottles.
River Mumma is a legendary Jamaican goddess who is said the haunt the island's waterways. She has been brought to life on the rum's label through illustrations by up-and-coming British artist Aaron Godwin-Lamptey.
The Vidya team says that the rum has a 'fruity and typically funky Jamaican nose' with banana, coconut and strawberries, accompanied by spicy oak and vanilla on the palate.
