Five Rivers Indian white spiced rum launches in UK

Indian spirits producer the Sanghera Rum Company has launched the country's first white spiced rum: Five Rivers.

The spirit is made with sugarcane grown on the Sanghera family's farm in Punjab, northern India, and is redistilled with Indian spices including cardamom, cassia, cloves, coriander and ginger to create the final liquid. It is bottled at 40% ABV and made without added sugar or flavourings.

Its producer says Five Rums has stewed fruit and citrus spice aromas, notes of sweet clove, cinnamon and cardamom on the palate and a long, peppery finish. It says the rum is best served tall over ice with tonic water.

Punjab translates as 'the land of five rivers' in English, referring to the five rivers that flow into the region from the Himalayas and nourish its agricultural land.

Taj Sanghera, founder of the Sanghera Rum Company, said: "Rum has soared in popularity over the last year, but its long-standing Indian heritage and methods of production aren’t widely known. India is the largest sugar-producing country in the world, and we’re proud to bring the world’s first dry white spiced rum to the UK.

"We wanted to elevate the quality of the spirit and created Five Rivers for the western palate, in a similar way to gin, but with unmistakable Indian flavours distilled into an Indian white spiced rum that can even be enjoyed neat."

Five Rivers has brought in Amit Sood, who has 25 years' experience in the drinks industry, as a brand ambassador. He said: "Being part of a brand with such strong heritage is a real honour and I’m excited to spread the message that India is the birthplace of sugarcane cultivation and the true home of rum."
