UK packaging services firm The Label Makers has worked with The Kraken Black Spiced Rum on a new design for its bottles.
Kraken commissioned the new label for the launch of a limited-edition release in 2020. Designed by NB Studio, the label wraps around two thirds of a specially embossed black glass bottle.
Taking its name from a mythical sea creature from Scandinavian folklore, Kraken's bottle is styled on a Victorian demijohn and includes two hoop handles, inspired by a seafaring practice of hanging bottles on hooks to prevent breakages.
The label features imagery of the Kraken's rumoured treasure bullion and incorporates a central lozenge panel containing the brand motif.
To achieve a no-label look, The Label Makers used black matt wine uncoated paper, which avoids white edges when die-cut, as well as a black flexo print and high-gloss varnish finish on the edges. These techniques were accompanied by a combination of embellishment processes to create texture on the label, including flexo pattern varnishes, hot and cold foiling and hi-build screen print.
Kevin Lyons, sales director at Bradford-based The Label Makers, said: "This label was a complex embellishment process from the outset, but one that we thoroughly enjoyed putting together. The end result speaks for itself and we are delighted to have been part of the process."
