SMWS owner launches J.G. Thomson & Co spirits range

The owner of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is launching a small-batch spirits brand: J.G. Thomson & Co.

The Edinburgh-based brand's range so far includes a Jamaican rum, a citrus-forward dry gin, three blended malt Scotch whiskies, and two limited-edition aged Scotch whiskies.

The blended malts have been named Sweet, Smoky and Rich, in homage to their dominant flavour profiles, while its inaugural aged whiskies - a 23-year-old blended malt from Speyside and a 1972 blended grain whisky - are set to be the first in a series of limited-edition batches.

J.G. Thomson & Co is being launched by SMWS owner The Artisanal Spirits Company, which is building a portfolio of premium brands and spirits. Its blending team is working closely with selected partner cooperages to procure specific casks, and to create customised casks.

The brand's name derives from a wine and spirits merchant which operated in Leith in the 18th century, a time when ships from around the world were bringing exciting new ingredients and products to Scotland's shores. In this era, the Thomson family developed a discerning eye for the best of the new spirits being brought in.

Emily Coyle, from J.G. Thomson & Co, said: "Just like the Thomsons did in the 1700s, we’re constantly on the hunt for new spirits, flavours and tastes to explore from around the world, whether that’s handpicking whisky in Scotland or rum in Jamaica. By focusing on creating small batches and limited editions, we want to explore different tastes and take full advantage of the opportunity to experiment, innovate, marry, blend, discover and learn.

"We believe there is a growing appetite for exceptional spirits among adventurous drinkers who are looking to taste something new and extraordinary. All our spirits are made using traditional methods such as small batch distillation, non-chill filtering and natural colour to focus entirely on taste and take people on a journey of discovery."

All of J.G. Thomson & Co’s spirits are available to buy from ,as well as at a range of leading whisky shops, bars and restaurants.
