Mijenta becomes first tequila to receive B Corp certification

Altos Planos Inc., producer of Mijenta Tequila, has announced that it has received B Corp certification from B Lab. It marks the first time a tequila producer has received the recognition, with the company exceeding the criteria required to earn the label.

The certification signifies companies that are focused on operating and growing in environmentally and socially conscious ways, prizing purpose alongside profit. Five key areas are covered in certification, including: governance, workers, community, environment and customers.

Mijenta has committed to a wide range of environmental responsibility while producing its products, with its carbon neutral approach perhaps the biggest of all. The company has offset nearly 720,000 kg of CO2 through its collaboration with ClimatePartner.

Elise Som, Mijenta co-founder and director of sustainability, commented: “Community and sustainability lie at the heart of Mijenta’s mission, and we are thrilled that with this certification, B Lab has affirmed the significant focus we’ve placed on implementing our core values. Through innovation, close collaboration with local suppliers and partnerships with likeminded organisations, we have worked from the outset to create a positive, lasting impact. For us, sustainability is about leaving a better world for our children, and we are excited to do even more as we continue to grow.”

Other sustainability steps that Mijenta have taken include eco-friendly packaging, the protection of forests and cloud forests, and the lack of use of pesticides and herbicides.

Juan Coronado, co-founder of Mijenta Tequila, added: “More than ever, consumers want to know exactly what they’re buying and drinking. That’s why for us, the commitment to transparency reflected in the B Corp certification also applies to our production process and is something we view as a critical component of quality for premium tequila. We are proud that our Blanco was recognised as Confirmed Additive Free and are excited for Tequila Matchmaker to observe the production process for our other expressions in the future.”
