Bacardi Limited is marking its 161 year anniversary with the planting of a tree for every employee in the company.
Each employee will receive an anniversary edition bottle of Bacardi Carta Blanca over the coming days, which comes with a QR code enabling them to plant their own tree and track its progress via an online platform.
The move is said to be part of a continued drive from the company to become one of the most responsible global spirits companies in the world.
CEO Mahesh Madhavan: “As a family-owned company, doing the right thing is in our DNA, and all of us at Bacardi share that passion for taking care of the environment. By creating our very own Bacardi forests, we can all take pride in having our own positive impact and being part of our company’s legacy for the next 161 years and beyond.”
11 different species of trees will be planted across India, Nepal, Indonesia, Ecuador and Madagascar, each carefully selected to fit its location and community.
Chief supply chain officer Dave Ingram added: “We care deeply about the farmers who grow our beautiful ingredients and take great pride in the strong relationships we’ve spent decades building with these communities. Planting these trees on their doorsteps is another way of giving back as we invest in their future and in protecting the environment for generations to come.”
As part of the initiative, Bacardi is also set to plant 161 coconut trees in Puerto Rico, in a move to regenerate a beach located near their rum distillery. The area has suffered immense damage over the years because of hurricanes.
