The Boatyard Distillery earns B-Corp Certification

Irish spirits maker, The Boatyard Distillery, has announced that its earned B-Corp certification, making it the first distillery on the island of Ireland to do so.

Awarded by non-profit organisation B Lab, the certification signifies companies that are focused on operating and growing in environmentally and socially conscious ways, prizing purpose alongside profit.

The certification covers five key areas: governance, workers, community, environment and customers.

The distillery excelled in meeting each B-Corp standard, receiving a total of 92 points, 12 points more than what’s needed for pass marks.

Boatyard’s CEO Joe McGirr said on the announcement: said “Achieving B-Corp status is a real testament to our team relentlessly looking at ways we can have a positive impact on our environment. The process took over a year of intense examination into our business so we’re really excited and proud to be the first distillery on the island of Ireland to become part of this global movement”.

Following the B-Corp certification announcement, Boatyard also unveiled Double Gin and Vodka Eco Refill pouches which will be released in the UK. Available through distributor Speciality Brands, the pouches are targeted at cocktail bars and restaurants primarily. The recyclable pouches are said to reduce packaging by 84% and carbon emissions from 9.8kg to 3.96kg.

Speaking on this unveiling, Declan McGurk, Boatyard’s Distillery Commercial Director, said: “More and more bar and restaurant partners are becoming sustainably minded and we want to support this. Our pouches offer increased capacity at a lower price point. It’s a win-win for everyone and a step forward to continue eliminating needless waste.”
