Torabhaig launches third Legacy Series expression

Isle of Skye distillery Torabhaig has launched the third expression in its Legacy Series, Cnoc Na Mòine, its first release featuring whisky matured in sherry casks.

Cnoc Na Mòine (which translates as ‘hill of peat’ in Scots Gaelic) is a single malt that Torabhaig says shows off its characteristic “well-tempered peat” with added richness and notes of oak and spice.

Torabhaig launched the Legacy Series in 2017 as a way of charting its journey to a 10-year-old single malt and the establishment of its house style. The first Legacy Series expression, its inaugural single malt, was released in 2017. It was followed by Allt Gleann in 2021, a cask strength variant of which followed in 2023.

Neil MacLeod Mathieson, Torabhaig whisky maker, said: “There is an intriguing complexity to peated whisky, an endless depth to explore. There are many faces and moods to peat, so a balance has to be found between strength and refinement, between elegance and robustness. Each expression in the Legacy Series captures our progress towards this vision and is a liquid snapshot of our whisky journey here on the Isle of Skye.

“This is the first expression where sherry casks have played a part in our journey as well. The way new flavours are revealed through time with different casks is such an exciting thing for a younger distillery to discover and highlights the magic of whisky making that can’t quite be explained, although it can be bottled.”

Torabhaig Cnoc Na Mòine is bottled at 46% ABV and is available from 21 March from the Whisky Shop and other specialist retailers at a recommended price of £58 (€66.50 / US$70).
