The Macallan collaborates with artist on new Home Collection release

The Macallan has announced the second edition of annual release series the Macallan Home Collection. The collection is named for and inspired by the natural land and surroundings of the Macallan Estate.
The new release is River Spey, named for the river running through the Estate. The Spey stars on the whisky’s outer packaging in a watercolour painting by photo-relist artist Michelle Lucking.
This marks the second artist collaboration for the Home Collection — for the first release, the Distillery, the brand featured artist and Macallan employee Colin Rizza’s watercolour paintings.
For River Spey, Lucking has created a series of six paintings of the river in her signature pastel realism. She commented: “The Macallan Home Collection, River Spey is all about a deep connection to nature — the Macallan wanted me to capture the majestic River Spey and its importance to them, the Estate and the whisky. I wanted to convey the importance not just of the river itself, but all its elements, the pebbles, the amazing autumnal colours in the surrounding landscape — from the soft yellows and ambers to the burnt umbers and deep treacle tones — hues that I had seen reflected in the natural colour of the whiskies.
"Creating something of beauty, it takes patience. I like to recreate all that fine detail with natural pigmented pastels… A lot like creating whiskies here at the Macallan — it takes time.”
Steven Bremner, whisky maker at the Macallan, added: “Crafted from a combination of European oak sherry seasoned casks, American oak sherry seasoned casks and refill casks, the Macallan Home Collection, River Spey embodies the dedication to incomparable craftsmanship and creativity, which the Macallan is renowned for.”
Tasting notes supplied by the Macallan highlight sultana, cinnamon, apple, and treacle sponge.
River Spey (44.8% ABV) is available now with an RRP of £240 via the Macallan Estate boutique, the Macallan global travel retail boutique, and domestic and e-boutiques.
