Symington announces release of vintages from heatwave year

Symington Family Estates has announced its 2022 vintage port releases. The collection of three ports includes fifth-ever vintage from its Capela do Vesúvio vineyard.

All three ports are a result of one of the hottest years on record in the Douro wine region, where Symington’s vineyards reside, with temperatures as high as 47°C. Although the dry, hot weather resulted in smaller grape bunches and berries, the winery was impressed with the resilience of the vines under the extreme conditions.

Announcing the launch, Charles Symington, head winemaker, said: “At Quinta do Vesúvio there were three micro-terroirs within the estate that sung beautifully in 2022. These were the three plots of vineyard that contribute to the limited-edition Capela da Quinta do Vesúvio Vintage Port. We only make this wine when these vineyards produce the power, structure and refinement required to create a standalone vintage port that expresses the unique characteristics of these vines.

“I believe that 2022 delivered such quality and am thrilled to announce the release of the fifth vintage of Capela do Vesúvio Vintage Port, together with two very exciting vintage ports from Quinta do Vesúvio and Dow’s Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira.”

The limited-edition Capela da Quinta do Vesúvio 2022 Vintage Port will be bottled in limited quantities, alongside Quinta do Vesúvio 2022 Vintage Port and Dow’s Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 2022 Vintage Port. All three will be available from mid-June.
