Glencairn designs bespoke decanters for East Asia Whisky Company

Independent bottler East Asia Whisky Company has announced the limited release of three Macallan single malt Scotch whiskies. East Asia collaborated with Glencairn Crystal, Scottish glassware company, for the hand-crafted decanters in which the whiskies are presented.

Macallan Mizunara 33 Years Old 1990 Komorebi Edition is the third and final whisky in the bottler’s Macallan Mizunara series, last released in 2022. Distilled in 1990, the whisky matured in an ex-bourbon cask for 31 years before a finishing period in Japanese mizunara oak. Just 100 bottles will be made available.

The inspiration behind the release was the Japanese term ‘komorebi’, meaning ‘sunlight filtering through trees’. The bespoke Glencairn decanter also draws on the concept, with an infilled engraving of a silver oak blossom branch. The design has featured on the previous two decanters in the series — each release seeing it grow a little around the bottle.

The Macallan Mizunara 33-Year-Old 1990 Komorebi Edition will be launched via Bonhams Finest Whisky & Spirits online sale from 23rd September–3rd October, before release via selecter retailers from mid-October. Price is available upon request.

As well as the Komorebi Edition, East Asia Whisky Company will release a limited edition pair of 33-year-old single malts also from the Macallan. The duo, named Macallan 33 Years Old Origins, is made in partnership with Ephemerus Concepts.

Distilled at Macallan, the two whiskies began life in the same sherry cask. Half was then split into a mizumara cask for an almost two-year finish. The project is a “study in oak”, exploring the differing result between the sherry- and mizunara-cask whiskies.

The twinned whiskies are presented in matching crystal handmade Glencairn decanters. Engravings on the bottles — a Pictish crescent with an arrow, and a Japanese fan with cherry blossoms — speak to the heritage behind each bottling.

Macallan 33 Years Old Origins will be launched as a set at Bonhams in late October.

Scott Davidson, Glencairn Crystal’s new product development director said: “It has been a privilege to be a part of the journey of these incredible whiskies. The design and creation of these striking decanters has challenged our design team and craftspeople to push beyond their creative limits and the end products are beautiful pieces of art - something to be very proud of”.
