Johnson Reserve sets world record for whisky flavours

Independent bottler Johnson Reserve has claimed a Guinness World Record for 'The Greatest Variety of Flavours in a Whisky' for its new whisky, Ascension. 
 
The title reflects the complex maturation and finishing process behind Ascension — a single cask of single malt which spent time in a sequence of 33 casks. No blending was used; Johnson Reserve used casks alone to enhance the flavour of the whisky.
 
Managing director Alexander Johnson commented: "While Ascension’s journey may sound complex, the result is a whisky that unfolds gracefully, offering layers of flavour that are discovered slowly and thoughtfully. Every cask has been selected with the aim of creating balance, not overpowering complexity." 
 
Among the 33 casks used were Madeira, mezcal, Rivesaltes, marsala, ruby port, Pedro Ximénez, and Armagnac casks, each adding a different element to the final product, whether dried-fruit sherry character or smoky, earthy mezcal notes. 
 
Johnson Reserve's cask maturation approach has been developed over the past 12 years. Cameron Jessiman, operations manager, explained: “The Johnson family has spent the past 12 years dedicated to this specific strategy, carefully sourcing the right stock, exploring optimal processes, and investing in extensive research and learning...
 
"We sample hundreds of barrels to ensure we select only those with the exact profile needed. This process required years of trial and refinement to understand the nuances of cask sequencing. Some casks have to precede others to create balance, allowing each layer of flavour to emerge distinctly without dominating the profile.”
 
For Alexander Johnson, the company's record-breaking technique has implications for the industry at large: "Our vision extends beyond Johnson Reserve. Our goal is to share what we’ve learned, so that advanced cask maturation can benefit the industry as a whole. While age statements often guide whisky purchases, many can be disappointed by older whiskies that lack 'active management.' We want to highlight that quality maturation is a matter of care and expertise, not just time."

Commenting on Ascension, Johnson added: "Ascension represents the pinnacle of our craft, and we believe that those who seek the rarest and most refined experiences will find its value reflected in the years of dedication and innovation behind each bottle."
 
Tasting notes from the brand highlight extensive flavours, as recognised by the world record. Notes mentioned include fruits (fig, pear, cherry), nuts (almond, hazelnut), cocoa, smoke, and spice.
 
Just 40 bottles of Ascension are available, and a ballot will be held for the chance to purchase. Price is available upon enquiry to Johnson Reserve.
